What Rawnd does instead.
Rawnd is a free, browser-based RAW culler. It opens a folder straight off the card, rates frames from the keyboard — P keeps, X rejects — and writes XMP sidecars that Lightroom, Camera Raw and Bridge read on import. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded, because there is no server to upload to.
It is not a full replacement, and it is worth being plain about that before the table. Photo Mechanic is an ingester and a browser with twenty years of newsroom workflow inside it: IPTC templates, code replacement, renaming rules applied on the way off the card. Rawnd does none of that. What it does is the culling, on any computer, for nothing — and it develops the frames you keep, which Photo Mechanic does not.

03 Where each one wins Honestly
Where Photo Mechanic wins
Ingest, and it is not close. Photo Mechanic reads a card faster than anything else on the market and has done for two decades — it renders the embedded previews so quickly that your first frame is on screen before a slower program has finished counting the files. If your day starts with two cards and a deadline, that is the entire argument and it is a good one.
Then metadata. Caption templates, code replacement, structured IPTC a picture desk expects, and renaming rules applied on the way in. Rawnd has none of it and is not building it. A news or sports photographer filing to an agency should buy Photo Mechanic and not think about this page again.
Where Rawnd wins
Cost, and reach. Rawnd is free and there is nothing to install, so it runs on a machine that is not yours — a borrowed laptop, a desk at a venue, a Chromebook — which is exactly the situation where a licence you own at home is no help whatsoever.
And it develops. Photo Mechanic browses and tags; it does not process a RAW file. Rawnd decodes it properly and gives you exposure, the tone curve, colour, crop and masks, then exports a JPG. So the frames you keep can leave as finished pictures rather than only as a selection to be opened somewhere else.

Common questions
Is Rawnd actually free, or is culling the trial?
Actually free. Rating, rejecting, comparing, developing and exporting a photograph — XMP sidecars included — are free for ever and on any number of files. Pro, at $6 a month or $69 once, only changes what happens across a whole selection at once: batch export, and pasting one edit onto many frames.
Can Rawnd replace Photo Mechanic completely?
Not if you use it for ingest and IPTC. There is no card ingest, no renaming rules, no caption templates and no catalogue, and those are the reasons most people bought it. If what you actually do with Photo Mechanic is open a folder and press keys until the shoot is sorted, then yes — that part Rawnd does, free.
Will Lightroom read the sidecars Rawnd writes?
Yes. They are written in Camera Raw's own schema at process version 2012 or later: ratings, the reject as a rating of −1, crop and the basic develop settings. Lightroom, Camera Raw and Bridge read them on import, and Capture One reads the ratings and crop.
Does Rawnd upload my photographs?
No, and there is nowhere for them to go — Rawnd has no server to receive them. The folder is read inside the page, on your own machine, which is also why it works with no signal.
